After the manner of blowing the woodwinds are shared into two kinds: labial and lingual. The method of playing on labials is in injecting the air into the transversal hole on the top of the instrument. The air flow is cleaved on the sharp edge of the hole. Owing to it the column of the air vibrates inside the tube. Along with other musical instruments flute is related to this kind too. In lingual musical instruments the air is blown through the reed. Clarinet and saxophone concern to this kind and some types of rare musical instruments. Resonance is made with the help of the reed in lingual instruments that is situated on the top of it. The reeds are of two types: single and double. A single reed is a slender cane, which shuts the aperture in the mouthpiece of the instrument and leaves a thin crack. The vibration of the reed serves to close and open the canal in the mouthpiece of the musical instrument. A double reed is a tight connection of 2 cane blades in the mouthpiece. While the air is being blown inside - it is resonating, shutting and opening the chink made by themselves. Musicians refer oboe and bassoon to these instruments. Read the rest of this entry »
